Coleraine is New Zealand's most famous red wine, first produced in 1982, this classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc displays the concentration, complexity and elegance found in the world's finest wines. Coleraine '22 harnesses the energy and complexity of Te Mata Cabernet Sauvignon, on show at its highest level since 1982. The beautiful floral aromas of lavender, violet, plum, and blackcurrant, are all in orbit around the wine's dark savoury core of tightly would graphite, nori, coffee grounds, vanilla and tobacco. The palate is intensely concentrated, with a superbright tension building freshness and precision as layer upon layer of fine polished tannins give pinpoint detail alongside signature, exacting, levels of finesse. Le Sol (French: the soil) is born of the renowned Gimblett Gravels viticultural appellation, with its gravelly soils attracting the sun in summer and insulating the vines in winter. The vines are planted in the stoniest parts of the vineyard to a heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand in the 1840s. Intensively hand managed, the grapes reveal a deep dark Syrah with purple hues. Le Sol is always aromatically pure with a luscious yet elegant mid-palate and a distinctive fine tannin finish. Very dark purple core. Abundant sweet, black fruits lead the bouquet, notably boysenberry and blueberry aromas. The tannin structure of the wine is exemplary and seamless from start to finish. The wine shows considerable drinkability in its youth, and the intensity is the highest in several years.

Rich magenta colour. Powerful, intense, black fruit and cherry aromas with lovely fragrant aromatic notes. On the mouth this wine is in perfect harmony with beautifully balanced fruit and tannins. A gleaming obsidian-dark, Coleraine 2020 flashes in the glass. From its depths glimmers wild roses and cedar, blackcurrants, dark cherries, plums - a rapid symmetry of perfectly ripe dark fruit. Notes of cocoa-nib, thyme, and layer upon layer of fine tannin are polished to a mirror-finish, shimmering the length of the wine. From its elevated aromatics to its monumental mid-palate weight, intense vitality, and long radiant finish, Coleraine 2020 is a window on midnight. Replete in detail. St Henri is a time-honoured and alternative expression of Shiraz, and an intriguing counterpoint to Grange. It is unusual amongst high quality Australian red wines as it does not rely on any new oak. Released for the first time by Penfolds in the early 1950s (first commercial vintage 1957), it gained a new lease of life in the 1990s as its quality and distinctive style became better understood. Proudly, a wine style that hasn't succumbed to the dictates of fashion or commerce. St Henri is rich and plush when young, gaining soft, earthy, mocha-like characters with age. It is matured in an assortment of old large vats that allow the wine to develop, imparting minimal, if any oak character. Although a small proportion of Cabernet may sneak into the blend, the focal point for St Henri remains Shiraz. True to form, the palate is quite savoury. Japanese nori paper and olive brine offer a very morish umami nuance. Fresh blueberry and mulberry leaf anchor the core of the mid-palate. Exotic spices adding intrigue, Alleppey turmeric, toasted cumin, pimento. The tannins are very tactile, comparable to Dutch cocoa. A classic St Henri that will reward extended time in the cellar.

Launched with the 1990 vintage in 1993, Bin 407 was developed in response to the increasing availability of high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. Inspired by Bin 707, Bin 407 offers varietal definition and approachability, yet still possessing structure and rich depth of flavour. Textbook cabernet sauvignon, the expressive Bin 407 demonstrates the reward of Penfolds multi-regional blending philosophy. A core of ripe fruit is well supported by sensitive use of French and American oak. After the aromatic impression, one might expect a forbidding palate. Not so. It's remarkably approachable, yet clearly built for a long spell in the dungeon. The cool dark fruits are very concentrated and varietal. The leafy notes on the nose morph into char-grilled savoury flavours of grilled capsicum and cumin spiced eggplant, infused by sandalwood and cherry wood smoke. The tannins are graphite-like, fine but reassuringly persistent, with a faint suggestion of bitter dark chocolate. At the time of tasting the wine is very energetic, dancing the tango at full tempo. Don't expect a slow waltz anytime soon. One for the long haul.

The Bollinger style: depth and subtlety. The emblematic cuvée of Bollinger's expertise. The delicate assembly of the expression of a harvest and a majority of reserve wines, some of them held in magnums for between 7 and 15 years Special Cuvée is composed of over 85% Grand and Premier crus of the three main Champagne varieties: 60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 15% Meunier. It is cellar aged for twice as long as required by appellation regulations. It is moderately dosed at between 7 and 8 grams per litre.

The grapes for Roaring Meg come from Mt Difficulty's Cromwell basin vineyards managed by their dedicated viticultural team. The addition of fruit from their Bendigo vineyard has lends a powerful, darker edge. Roaring Meg Pinot Noir features red, blue and black berry fruit aromatics. The palate is harmonious with rich dark berries and a savoury line underneath. A hint of spice and dried thyme complement the succulent fruit. Fine silky tannins frame the wine with a great flow and finish.
