A favourite among collectors, St Henri has been quietly doing things its own way since its first commercial vintage in 1957. While many great Australian reds are shaped by new oak, St Henri takes a different path, maturing in large, seasoned vats that allow the Shiraz to develop with little influence from oak. The result is a style that has remained remarkably true to itself across generations. The 2020 vintage is classic St Henri, with generous berry fruit and an intriguing savoury edge. Aromas of berry conserve, strawberry flan and rhubarb are layered with red glace cherry and savoury notes of roast lamb, cured beef and spice. On the palate, fresh blueberry and mulberry sit alongside nori and olive brine, creating a moreish umami character, while exotic spices add further intrigue. Tactile, cocoa-like tannins provide structure and carry the wine through a long, savoury finish. Rich yet restrained, the 2020 St Henri is a compelling reminder of why this distinctive Penfolds style has earned such a loyal following. Enjoyable now, it has the depth and structure to reward extended cellaring through to 2050.
